The resolution followed a matter of urgent national importance raised by Representative Unyime Idem, who called for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.

According to a report by Channels Television, allegations have been raised about possible delays in medical attention and the medication administered to Daniel before his condition deteriorated. The allegations have prompted renewed calls for accountability and a thorough examination of medical services provided to corps members during their orientation programme.

The House’s intervention follows a similar move by the Senate, which on October 15 ordered a comprehensive investigation into Daniel’s death and the condition of medical facilities across NYSC camps nationwide. The Senate’s resolution followed a motion sponsored by Senator Aniekan Bassey. The investigation is expected to be conducted by relevant Senate committees in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services. The lawmakers expressed concern about the availability of qualified healthcare workers, functional medical equipment and effective emergency referral arrangements in orientation camps.

Daniel’s death has also raised questions about the procedures followed when corps members develop serious medical conditions during orientation. Reports indicate that allegations of delayed hospital referral and concerns about the medicines administered to the deceased are being examined.

However, the circumstances surrounding his death remain subject to investigation, and allegations of negligence or fake medication should not be treated as established facts. The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has reportedly collected medicine samples for laboratory analysis as part of its investigation into the incident.

The NYSC operates a healthcare arrangement in collaboration with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), known as the Group Individual and Family Social Health Insurance Programme for Corps Members. According to the NYSC, the programme is designed to provide eligible corps members with access to healthcare services, including primary care and referrals for specialist treatment. During orientation, designated NHIA-accredited healthcare facilities are expected to manage camp clinics.

The latest legislative interventions are expected to examine whether existing arrangements are adequate and consistently implemented across the country. Improving access to qualified medical personnel, essential medicines, emergency equipment and prompt referrals could help reduce risks to corps members participating in the national service programme.

The investigations by the National Assembly and relevant agencies are expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding Daniel’s death, establish whether any lapses occurred and recommend measures to prevent similar incidents. The outcome could also influence calls for stronger medical standards, clearer emergency procedures and improved oversight of healthcare delivery at NYSC orientation camps.
